review 1: Widowers’ Houses by George Bernard ShawNot the best work you can read…forgettable, or worseI am not sure what to make of this play. On one hand, there are some worthy aspects and on the other it is forgettable. To say the least.Of course, I may be completely wrong. And I am biased and subjective. To me it reads in a few ways as a communist manifesto.I am exaggerating and trying to be funny. But only a little bit.Harry and Blanche fall for each other, on a trip through Germany.Pretty soon, there is talk of marriage and then traditions and rules come into playHarry and the public learn about the position of Sartorius, Blanche’s father.By accident, they happen to meet Lickcheese, who had worked for Sartorius, but is dismissed. And the reason is that he had not been cruel and... more ruthless enough in dealing with tenants that live in misery in the shoddy houses that Sartorius owns.Lickcheese had repaired a stairway that had caused accidents, causing the wrath of his employer who sacked him. When he learns about the way his would be father-in –law makes his money, harry has a shock. But the socialism lesson is not over yet. There is a confrontation between Sartorius and Harry, and what I have left in my mind is like this:- You are disgusted by the way I make my money?- …- Well, how do you make yours?- From interest, this is a clean method- You think so? It is worse than mine- I am forced to squeeze every penny out of my tenants, because of the high interest which is imposed on meSo we are taught a few things about the cruel, heartless capitalists. But I do not buy that and go as far as saying that the great GB Shaw was a fool from this point of view.He bought the Bolshevik propaganda and even worse, shared and pushed this poison around.I have lived in that “glorious political system” and I know it firsthand. There is nothing worse and capitalism, with its flaws is heaven when compared with the communist hell.Having said that, it is crystal clear that I come with a lot of prejudice and it affects my judgment of works that promote socialist ideas, even if remotely or only with subliminal messages. But this is no “professional „advice, it is a personal note. And the conclusion is- I did not like it.
