review 1: I was hooked on Newbury & Hobbes after consuming this book. A definite page turner with lots of intrigue. I love how the occult is such an important part in Newbury's role as an agent for the queen. The characters are all very well developed and easy to get attached to. I always try to recommend this series of books to folks who are into Sherlock Holmes style mysteries and seem to have an appreciation for fantasy as well (or are at least willing to explore that genre a bit). A must read for any steampunk!
review 2: When I read the cover text about a steam punk victorian London, where Queen Victoria is kept alive by machines and air ships rule the sky, I was intrigued. Sadly, the book didn't live up to my expectations. The story is not too bad and quite interest
... moreing, but the style of writing plus the mistakes dampened my enthusiasm. I read the German translation, so I can't be sure if the mistakes (like changing house no or missing words) were made by the author or the translator. It was a nice enough read, but that's it - at least for me. less

This is a quick read, entertaining but to simple and predictable.
