review 1: It's been a long time since I read a short story collection. As a fan of Butcher, Gabaldon and Gaiman, how could I not try this one, especially since it's edited by George R. R. Martin? Most of the stories are very good. A couple are astonishing. Only one made me think "meh" when I was done with it. It was especially entertaining to finish one story, then start another in a completely different place in space and time.
review 2: I love the idea of sampling various authors’ writing styles and discovering which appeal to me to pursue more of their works, as well as which I may choose to avoid. I am especially fond of these stories being geared towards love or ill-fated love, as this is the part of a story where some authors get incredibly banal. *Also* I l
... moreike the “out of 10” method of rating over the 5 stars rating method. To me it seems a better way to encompass the varying degrees of enjoyment. • LOVE HURTS- JIM BUTCHER …. I give it 7 out of 10I thought this was a very cute and entertaining little love story mixed with the modern paranormal genre. I enjoyed the fact that both the “love” scenes and the paranormal aspects were not too overtly over the top, as sometimes tends to happen in a paranormal romance. I have never read anything from Butcher prior to this short story, but am now interested in discovering more, and am particularly looking forward to reading the series this little snippet was based from: The Dresden Files.• THE MARRYING MAID- JO BEVERLY… I give it 5 out of 10This story was an amusing, adult oriented fairytale. It isn’t one that completely carried me away, or that I would revisit, but was enjoyable nonetheless. • ROOFTOPS- CARRIE VAUGHN… I give it a 5 out of 10It was a pretty good story. I’m not so sure that the super hero thing is for me, but it wasn’t bad. I was pleasantly surprised when the author did not take the obvious course to wrap up the story. I did like that part. • HURT ME- M.L.N. HANOVER… I give it 9 out of 10This story had me hooked pretty quickly. Towards the beginning I felt a twisted kind of fascination with what appeared to be her morbid version of pleasure, and curious about her tainted past that had been hinted at to drive her to such extremes. Once the ending hit, it took me by complete surprise and I felt a strong sense of pride in this female character. I look forward to reading more of Hanover’s work. • DEMON LOVER- CECELIA HOLLAND… I give it 7 out of 10This was an interesting story, somewhat like a fairy tale with its morbid ways to make a point at morality. On the whole, I found this to be an enjoyable, somewhat disturbing, easy read. • THE WAYFARER’S ADVICE- MELINDA M. SNODGRASS… I give it 4 out of 10This type of story isn’t really my cup of tea. I’m very finicky when it comes to things that are futuristic and Alien though, to be fair. I couldn’t really get engrossed in this story the way I had with the others. I didn’t really “feel” the emotions portrayed. I do not think I would be interested in any of her other works if this one is anything to gauge by. • BLUE BOOTS- ROBIN HOBB… I give it 9 out of 10I adored this story. Although some parts were somewhat predictable, it did not detract from my enjoyment of it. The cadence of Hobb’s writing suits me very well. I have her on my “to read” list already and had high expectations from recommendations of other readers. If this short story is anything to go by, Hobb does not disappoint. I look forward to reading more. • THE THING ABOUT CASSANDRA- NEIL GAIMAN… I give it 5 out of 10I was very interested in the story all the way until the end. I am not sure what it was supposed to have meant. Are they both imaginary? Are both real, but from different worlds or dimensions? One real and the other fantasy? If so which one? My best guess is that Cassandra has a split personality, but I am not completely sure. Had it tied up in a way I understood (or if someone can tell me where I failed to acknowledge the information in reading) I would give it a higher score. • AFTER THE BLOOD- MAJORIE M. LUI… I give it 8 out of 10I enjoyed this story. There were parts that confused me. I would have liked to have known more surrounding Henry’s mother’s past that was brought up yet never fully explained. You can kind of put the pieces of that past together, but I am not completely sure that my assumptions are correct.• You and You Alone- Jacqueline Carey… I give it 10 out of 10Okay, so I may be just a bit biased on this one. Jacqueline Carey is my FAVORITE author, and this short story stems from my favorite books. I admit, when I got this book, I read this story first then went back to the beginning of the book. I read it again once I came to it in order. There is something in the way that she writes that traps me and pulls me in. I feel what her characters feel. Ever since having read The Kushiel’s Legacy series I have yearned to read more, especially in regards to Delaunay! That being said, I devoured this long awaited tale. I still want more. Terre D’Ange will never be through for me. • HIS WOLF- LISA TUTTLE… I give it 7 out of 10This story was sweet. Some of it was a little hard to swallow as any kind of reality, such as the “oh you didn’t know” nonchalant-ness regarding the drug dealing. Part of me wants to say I would’ve wanted more details, or more time for them to build a relationship before the inevitable happened, but I DO realize that this IS a short story and probably had a length limit. I do think that this little tale would make a good full blown novel and would be interested in reading her other works. • COURTING TROUBLE- LINNEA SINCLAIR… I give it 6 out of 10Once again I must press upon you to remember that I am very finicky in regards to futuristic, space types of stories. That being said, I enjoyed this one for the most part. There were a few things here and there that didn’t quite sit right with me, but in all, not a bad story. • THE DEMON DANCER- MARY JO PUTNEY… I give it 6 out of 10The world created in this story was a very interesting one. I did feel that some of David’s abilities were a little too convenient- the ability to find parking or hail a taxi cab? The ending was a bit awkward, but for the most part, I liked the general idea behind the story. I would be willing to venture out and take a chance on reading one of Putney’s actual novels. • UNDER/ABOVE THE WATER- TANITH LEE… I give it 9 out of 10I loved this one. It was a kind of cross between fairytale and mythology text. I enjoyed the bouncing back and forth to see the multiple perspectives of each moment. I will be looking to read more from Lee.• KASIKA- PETER S. BEAGLE…I give it 7 out of 10This was very interesting, though I’m not quite sure how to even describe it, I did like it. I would like to read more.• MAN IN THE MIRROR- YAMINE GALENORN I give it 9 out of 10I absolutely adored this. I think this also would have made a great FULL book. It was very bittersweet. I will be looking for more by Galenorn for sure. • A LEAF ON THE WIND OF ALL HALLOWS- DIANA GABALDON… I give it 9 out of 10I found this story fascinating and was sad to put it down. I want more! I will definitely be looking for the Outlander Series (and especially look forward to #7 since it explains more from this short story here).I originally found this book at our public library, but I assure you that I will be purchasing my own copy to read again and again.
