review 1: I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. This book gave me a great respect for pioneers. It is amazing the things they endured, and a miracle that there weren't more deaths on treks like this one. It really gives you a great look at what they went through. It was also cool that at the end of each chapter it tells you which events were documented and factual and which were a made up part of the story. I loved David and his dads relationship! It was very sweet! This book was different then the books I normally read, because I'm not a big fan of historical fiction, but it was really good. There were several places where they were having meetings that I thought dragged on a bit, but over all it was really good! If you loved the Work and the Glory series... more I am sure you will like this book too!
review 2: I found this book very interesting and entertaining. I live in Utah but I'm not LDS. However, I do find LDS history fascinating. This book didn't disappoint. It is full of historical facts and drama. The only faults I could find were: 1) It tends to be a bit too "sugary sweet". I found the same problem with Lund's Work and the Glory series. He tries too hard to leave an impression that Mormons are good and non-Mormons are sometimes good but usually bad. 2) Lund's descriptions of h the landscape and geographic obstacles left a lot to be desired.Overall, I highly recommend this book. Bonus: It's the fastest 800-page read I've ever experienced. less
