review 1: I really should have known better than to read something based on the Odyssey while on my commute - my trip took practically twice as long as it should have. I sympathize with the protagonist (never named), whose travails are unashamedly based on the Odyssey, but set in a near-future world that has just tipped over into the edge of apocalypse. The updatings of the various adventures of Odysseus work really well, and this story puts a lot of focus on Penelope's travails at home. The soldier's journey takes him from the Middle East through Africa, back to his home in Upstate New York, and it is tempestuous - I didn't get the sense of ten years passing, but there is a sense that some time is passing by. The soldier's allies shrink and grow through the adventure, which make... mores for some interesting variations on the original story, and there are some horrific moments that resonate strongly. The art is interesting - the line work is very strong, but the coloring focuses on solid tones, which has a strange effect on some of the pages. Not bad, just different. All in all, it's a journey worth taking once, but don't be surprised if you get delayed by it as well.
review 2: Playing the part of Odysseus, you have The Man They Call Nobody... or G.I.Joe.The Cyclop is played by Ah-nold reprising his role as the Terminator.Penelope plays herself as the girl with no irises. All kidding aside, this was a very good and enjoyable read.True, not all of Omer's The Odyssey is covered, but there's only so much you can put in a graphic novel of a couple hundred pages.Putting the story in a near-future distopian with a very "true" feel where you know this sort of thing could (and will) probably happen makes it all the more realistic. A little more research could have been made for the illustrations of the weapons, but that doesn't detract the reader from the story.I thought the art was a little toned down, but I think that is because the inking is more "linear" than the usual sort... kind of like it was done using pens rather than brushes. It gives it a clean if somewhat "unfinished" maybe even sort of bland look. And where the heck was the hero's dog Argos?... a major point in the original Odyssey!I'd have given it 5 stars had they included Argos ;-) less

One of the best retellings of The Odyssey I've ever read. Highly recommend. Deep and enveloping.

Interesting variation on the homeward bound warrior/Odyssey theme.
