review 1: I had a love-hate relationship with this book. I loved the basic theme of the book....the abuse of the mining community by big business. I hated the older man falls for pretty younger female who makes him feel young again thus spends a ton of company money on most things she is involved with. The writing style was outstanding, the information on mountain top mining and the environment abuse was so informative......5 stars for the basis of the story and 0 stars for the platonic affair = 3 stars for me. But, I must admit my book club would love this book.....
review 2: I have been looking and looking for a book with characters I could root for and I found them here in Nattie Oakes and Charlie Burden who have to be the two most decent people in the world caugh
... moret between their desires and their conscience. when the book seems predictable you don't mind because you like these characters so much. Having only seen the nusicl ad never having read Les Miserables I can't say with any genuine authority but I believe you could call this an Appalachian Les Mis. (thankfully it is shorter) less
