review 2: Quite different and darker than the Guido Guerrieri books, but excellent. Giorgio Cipriani is a law student, living at home, good grades, good girlfriend, when he accidentally meets Francesco. They have a lucky night at cards together, and then Francesco reveals the deceit behind the luck.Giorgio is drawn in, by the money, by the cleverness of the tricks, by Francesco. Soon his life is upside down, he misses his final exams, quarrels with his parents, breaks up with his girl. But there's the money, and the excitement, and the possibilities Francesco holds out to offset the losses.Meanwhile, the local carabinieri aren't worried about card sharks, they are trying to catch a serial rapist who strikes at random and leaves no clues behind. As usual, the characters are really well drawn, the atmosphere is appropriately foreboding, the language spare and eloquent. less

Well-written but not exactly enjoyable.. Disturbing in how someone can manipulate another person.
