review 1: This is Carofiglio's second book starring defense lawyer Guido Guerrieri, and the third that I've read. It's the best by far. It's a short book that comes to the main story pretty quickly, the story of a woman being stalked and abused by a vicious man whose father is a powerful judge. Two lawyers have already refused to help her fearing retribution. The woman is assisted by a Sister who runs a secretive shelter for battered women. As in the other books, the story is told chronologically which means that we see Guerrieri as he works on other matters and lives his life in the city of Bari, where he grew up. He is an interesting man who is very simple and straightforward in his dealings with people. He is also a very good lawyer, who usually manages to pull out some use... moreful facts from big dull case files. He also gets more into the personal lives of the people he meets than he really wants to.There is a parallel story running through the main one. It's told in a series on short italicized first-person narratives. We don't know who is telling this other story or why, until near the end of the book. The revelation is not a huge surprise, but it still packs a punch.
review 2: A fine follow up to 'Involuntary Witness'. The strength of these books is not in the plot, but in the character of the narrator. Carofiglio has created a lawyer that we can empathise with - a truly difficult task. This is man who has recovered from a severe depression in the first book and who redeems himself through his work. Trouble is he still doesn't think much of himself or his work. The character is flawed (who isn't?) but I felt attracted to him as he struggles to confront his demons (such as being attracted to a Nun). The style is dry and witty; i really like the way we hear the narrators interior thoughts about those around him. It's more, much more than crime or courtroom thriller. I want to read the next one straight away. less
