review 1: I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I judged the book by its cover and thought Its target audience was kids. Kids will probably enjoy or more accurately tolerate this book. I like the comic style with clean lines - it matches the setting of the book. The characters were distinct and reminded me of some if my childhood buddies. You can't help but relate to playing outside, crazy games based on superheroes or imagination and the little differences between treasures and junk. The appearance may be kid-friendly but the audience are for kids at heart.
review 2: There are no 'big' events, no direct linear narrative, beyond the type of narrative that any of our lives are - a series of often unrelated events - and yet this is a wonderful story, because it's
... morevery simply the story of (a) childhood. Fixed in time and location by its details, yet universal in its themes and feelings, this is as evocative a conjuring of childhood as you could hope to read, and utterly charming. Gilbert Hernandez creates another absolute gem. less

A pleasant read. Presents childhood events without any over-arching narrative. Strong characters.

What it's like to be a child. Hernandez' capturing of this essence in this book is astonishing.

Reminded me of Archie and at times I had trouble distinguishing who was who. But it was cute.
