review 1: I found plenty to sink my teeth into when reading Firebrand, a full-textured fantasy based on Scottish mythology. Ms. Philip paints an intriguing fantasy without resort to overused fantasy literature tropes. She made me long to visit the beautiful world of the Sithe, hidden from 17th century or so "full-mortals" by the magical Veil, and reachable only via watergates hidden in lochs. I want to ride a fearsome water horse (kelpie) like the Sithe. Gillian paints with well-measured strokes. The Sithe are nature-loving, fierce, long-lived and telepathic, but they're not nearly so wise or peace-loving or otherworldly as Tolkien's Elves. Those traits nicely complement the personality of the story's troubled protagonist. Even the violence in the story is refreshingly spare. The st... moreory grabbed my heart and wouldn't let go. I'm looking forward to reading the others in this series.
review 2: Good, solid entertainment. There are a lot of flash-forwards intended, I think, to rope the reader into reading the entire series as it comes out. I could see myself reading them, but not with baited breath. The writing is much better than the average fantasy novel, but somehow I have not really bought into the author's new world (maybe not yet?). Is this the modern writing style - hint at a more fully developed world but just give you a taste for now? I guess I would have preferd a more stand-alone book. (Does that make me old school?) less
