review 1: The story is lovely, touching and heart-wrenching. Though for a story of domestic abuse, its not as emotive as some. Penny wasn't too easy to connect with. Fatimah and Connie Mai(? I think), could have done with more background. Their stories are incredible, so why the lack of depth. Flashbacks here would have been good. My major gripe with this book is that it makes it seem like people need a god to be strong and free. I don't mind having a Christian character, but when the book feels like a sermon at the end, you're doing something wrong. What was good was the implication that not all Christians are good people, or at least not as good as others, but please have good characters that aren't Christian; that does happen too.
review 2: This was a very powerful bo
... moreok that really captures what it is like to be locked or feel as though you are locked into a bad relationship. Domestic Violence is real and it kills a lot of woman. We often blame the victims asking why does she/he stay and not ask the perp why he/she hits. Anyway, the message and truth to this book really hits the heart. It is powerful, emotional, and true. Penny started out a weak and broken woman, marrying because she thought that life would be better than the one she was living. Young and naive like so many, but her heart was in the right place, just the wrong man. Over the course of the story she struggles with being dutiful and being a Christian wife. She was just confused. Then you have these two wonderful women with their own tale of woe, and they befriend her. I mean true blue friendship that last a lifetime. I love that they don't judge her, but are honest with her and even supportive when she made some bad decisions, but we all come to truth at our own time. I also like that Gina shows how people misuse the scripture to justify their sins and/or actions. The best thing about this book is though it is fiction, it is so real. There are a lot of Penny's out there and some end up dead like Sara because of fear of judgment, misguided loyalty, untrained people giving advice and not truly understanding domestic violence, and being naive enough to believe "I love you" or "I'm sorry. This book captures all of that and I think it is a book that opens discussions that need to be had. A good book, and one I highly recommend! less
