review 1: Tbh my actual rating for this book is about 2.5 stars, but i can't do that. So i was undecided between rounding it to a 2 and 3 but eventually i decided on a 2.I love Monster High. And i know that the intended audience are kids, from elementary to middle school. But despite this, i think the book could've been improved. Little details are mentioned so much in the book but they don't affect the main plot at all! For instance, the wheezing/screaming sound in the graveyard and the architecture of the place was mentioned in two paragraphs; i really thought that that detail was going to be a part in the 4 students' plan to apprehend Sylphia Flapper in the graveyard.Or the gypsy vampire sisters. Jokes about how they never sleep in one place is so often made that i was annoyed/up... moreset/disappointed that more about those characters weren't mentioned.Robecca and Kik's relationship, or their to-be relationship is narrated, little conversations or thoughts are mentioned such as Kik's protective instinct towards Robecca or the conversation about glasses and sight between them; but they never conclude to anything! You expect something to happen, not even the start of a relationship but just a word exchange, a moment of honesty, anything! But.. it's as if it remains unresolved. Maybe all the unresolved events will be connected and concluded in the following books of the series, which i will definitely be reading. One of the biggest flaws was how less the character developments were mentioned. Jokes or remarks about Robecca's lateness, her low attention span, etc were so constantly made that when her overcaming her time problem during the apprehension was told so carelessly in just one sentence it wasn't enough at all! The supporting characters were so less focused on that it bothered me.The only thing I really liked was how Rochelle's good and bad parts were highlighted. Rochelle's natural need to stick to rules, her feeling ashamed for breaking furniture or harming garments, her need to help others in need was very well told. Especially when she replied to the question "Are these written in Gargoyle Rules too?" with "No. These are written in Rochelle Rules." when she had to break a law for the good of her friends and every monster in her school; that part was amazing. Rochelle's personality was so well told for an elementary-middle school reading level that it disappointed me when i couldn't get the same thing out of all the other characters. The boy crush thing with Rochelle, the conflict between Deuce and Garrott remained a bit unmentioned too, with the letter thing not having an importance at all in the story (it was just thrown to the side and later on forgotten; but then again maybe that says something about Rochelle's behaviour towards Garrot); but i liked the part with Rochelle being the only one able to stare into Deuce's eyes, so i have no negative comment about that.I like how the words are changed into things such Gillary Clinton, ghoulfriends, etc.. but that's not something specific to the book, it's something that MH does on their own so Gitty Daneshvari couldn't really change that even if she wanted to, i think. But Gillary one was invented by her (i think?) so kudos for that.I also liked how Gitty Daneshvari stuck to the descriptions of the characters of Rochelle, Robecca and Venus and constructed her own that hadn't been introduced in the series. I just really hope they will be looked in deeper in the next book.P.S: Also can't wait to learn more about what will happen to Mr Death!! :)
review 2: This school year, I have a few fourth grade girls who are really into these books. I decided to ask one of them to loan one to me so I could check it out for myself. All I have to say is WOW! This was one of the worst books I have ever read. It's all about fashion, dating and being popular. Ugh! I will definitely not be purchasing any of these books for my classroom. The only positive about this book was that is had some rich vocabulary. less
