A St. Just Mystery
review 1: What fun! G.M. Malliet spoofs many aspects of "chick lit" and murder-mystery writers in this funny novel about a collection of mystery writers, agents and a publisher or two who are attending a Writers Conference in Edinburgh and staying in a castle/hotel together. Of course, one of them is murdered and our hero, Detective Chief Inspector St Just is on the scene to solve the crime. Each of the characters is a cliche (the aging female writer who lives in the US but sets her books in Britain; the ruthless male author of spy novels who may have done undercover work for MI5...). Great stuff!
review 2: This mystery takes place at a mystery writers' conference in Scotland. Staying at Dalmorton Castle, are a publisher, several authors, agents, and a Cambridge DCI
... morewho is scheduled to speak at the conference. When the trendiest, and most successful of the authors is found dead there is no shortage of suspects. DCI St. Just is on hand and joins with the local authorities in solving the case. I was quite enjoying it until the scene where all suspects are brought together and each's reasons for doing things are fleshed out. That felt forced, awkward, and unnatural. The rest was good and an enjoyable escape read. less

A different style for Malliet. I strongly prefer her Max Tudor style, characters and setting.

A quick and easy, amusing read. Made me chuckle in places.

Very enjoyable but I felt uninvolved.
