Max Tudor
review 1: This first in the series has a lot of potential. The main character is Max Tudor, hinting that he might have an interesting story to tell us. We get bits and pieces of it as the story progresses. We find that he used to be an MI5 agent and he flashes back to earlier times as things remind him of that past. The big drawback for me were the many, many characters I had to remember. I read this book on a Kindle and it wasn't until I finished the story that I found a list of all the characters (19). Wish I had known it was there. Surely some of the characters could have been dropped. But I did like the story and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series, A Fatal Winter.
review 2: I can see why Malliet won the Agatha Award. Malliet's writing is
... moresort of archaic in that it is long-winded but with a clean hitting point. Her metaphors actually made me laugh out loud and were spot on. This book, as one of the readers has pointed out, is a mix of Agatha Christie meets Midsomer Murders. I also think it has a fair mix of of characters from Keeping up appearances. Wanda is SO MUCH like Hyacinth Bucket and the Major is a lot like Richard, oh and Jasper is TOTALLY a shady Sheridan. (Yes, I love British TV.) Max was characterized very well. There were too many characters and I didn't feel like investing time in getting to know each of their quirks for this single corpse (non-series) mystery. I'd read a few more books by Malliet just to savor her writing style. I knew who the murderer was halfway through the book. less

So much potential if only the characters did not sound like caricatures for most of the novel.

I'm liking this series of traditional English village mysteries with a modern twist.

Good murder mystery set in English village. Main character is an Anglican priest.

A quick read, but not engaging enough to want to read the others in the series.

A bit dry.
