review 1: I really enjoyed this book. It is set in an era that I am not very familiar with as I tend to stick to books set in the Republic or the Princeipate so this was new ground for me. The author brings to life the fear and uncertainty of the late Roman world. As the glory and power of the legions wane they face their toughest test as hoards of barbarian horsemen push at the porous borders. The author also brings to life a great cast of characters. They start as three different threads that tell their own stories but all come together at the final climactic battle. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next installment.
review 2: I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I debated between rating this book 2 or 3 stars for a while bef
... moreore deciding on 2 stars. It was an interesting story and a realistic portrayal of the Roman Empire, but I couldn't really get into it. The short chapters broke up the flow and there were so many characters it was difficult to keep track of them all. The ending did wrap up everything nicely though and left it open for a sequel. I'd be interested to see where it goes. less
