review 1: “Starry River of the Sky” is a book about traditional Chinese stories that are incorporated into a plot. In this book, the boy stows away and ends up in a quiet little town where he can’t stand staying. He plots and plots to leave this place, but before he gets to it, he becomes friends with the people who house him. I read both of the Grace Lin books required for my 307 class, but I didn’t like this one as much as “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.” I think that is because I didn’t relate to this main character as well. I thought he was a little too selfish and I lost interest in the book before he started to change and become a better person. I do value that this book is a strong example of multicultural literature though. This is a quality book. I would k... moreeep it in my classroom library. I just didn’t like it as much as other books that I have read. It didn’t exactly appeal to me.
review 2: Elementary OBOB, book 16. Last book of the OBOB group. I had been putting off reading it because it seemed long and wordy and my 10-year old said he didn't like it. I actually loved it! I can see how it could be confusing for an elementary student, but very worthwhile to read. Lin really brought poetry and myth to life. I didn't read the companion novel "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon", a previous OBOB book, because I thought the same thing as this one, that it seemed long and boring. But I think I will read it now! I really enjoyed this book. less
