review 1: I like Greig Beck's fast paced, danger-close style and I certainly love the unstable, superhuman soldier, protagonist that he has created for each one of the Alex Hunter/ Arcadian series. I'm not going to lie, the idea of going up against an extraterrestial microorganism that would put the one in Crichton's "Andromeda Strain" to shame, was damn terrifying and a vicious opponent for not only super soldier Alex aka "The Arcadian" to go against but pretty much everyone else in the South American jungle back drop. Unbelievably lethal, to the point that the organism can dissolve entire humans within hours, I had to wonder if Alex was going to make it out alive. This is the third book that I have read in the series and it certainly won't be my last. Within this book though, I ha... moreve to add that you get to see something cruel (crueler than lost limbs, dissolved bodies, a vicious alien life form and its host body and what not). You get a glimpse of what Alex's life could be, his love for his woman Aimee, from the first book, his yearning for stability and poof...all that gets spun on its head. I won't say anything about the ending other than I can't figure out why as a vested reader, Beck wants me to care or believe about the female Mossad agent who is so in love/obsessed with the Arcadian. As a weapon and a supersoldier to be cloned by her country, I could understand the attraction but as a love interest, I don't get it. I have to admitt the chick came out in me as I immediately took the side of his main squeeze...who just wants him to have a normal life. But for the Arcadian, I kinda get the feeling that normalcy is gonna be on the shelf for a while. Hmm, time to get book 4 and see :D
review 2: 3.5* out of 5. It would actually be closer to a four, but I can't bring myself to it for the nonsensical reason of it being - well - not exactly fine literature. Not that I knew I could be such a snob, but okay, I CAN. But I still LOVED this. It was so much fun, a romp in the jungle with a designed super-soldier against an alien species released from a cavern. What more could you possibly ask for on a Saturday night, accompanied with a nice glass of red wine? :D Highly recommended if you like this sort of thing (unpretentious SF). less

This book made me squirm so many times. If it was a movie I don't think I could watch it.
