review 1: Alex Hunter, a super-soldier of sorts, leads a elite Special Forces team to Antarctica to investigate the disappearance of a scientific expedition and the Green Beret team sent to find them. Mayhem ensues when Hunter et al. stumble onto a clutch of prehistoric beasties. Oh, and there's team of Russian commandos chasing them as well. Suspension of disbelief required, but it's a solid and engaging start to a sci-fi/action series, now some five novels in.
review 2: Based on the reviews and the plot I had high expectations about this book. I must say the beginnig of it was quite good and got me interested especially when Alex Hunter was presented to us. His superhuman powers and the fact that he had a military preparation made him the perfect superhero for this boo... morek. I couldn't wait to go further into the action to see what he was capable of,imagining any sort of badass scenes with him fighting mosters, Borshov and saving the day but instead I got nothing of that. The scene when he fights the villain is very short and poor of action or suspense, he later does little to save his collleagues although he is supposed to have all those super powers... And speaking of the superpowers... He uses them only to lift some rocks and see through dark... Very disappointing hero...The only characters that got me interested were Matt, Monica and the giant cephalopod. Aimee was useless to the story and the plot, put there only as a love interest for the "hero" although during the adventure nothing significant happen between them to make us believe that they should end up toghether. less
