review 1: This is one of those books that crosses over genres. I assumed at first that it was a mystery, which it really is not. It involves a missing high school senior, a beautiful, talented and compassionate girl who is about to go to Cornell University. However, this disappearance really just lurks in the background as various members of this small New Jersey community are examined: a retired music teacher who lives alone, a middle-aged woman having an affair with a teenage boy, a Black boy (of white parents) who takes photographs and makes collages, the boyfriend of the missing girl, and, of course, the family of the missing girl. Everyone has secrets, and the book is really a look at the underside of small town America. The writing is very good, and there are many refere... morences to music and its effect on us. The book is very intelligent and quite sensual. It also can be dark, at times. People who are looking for gripping mystery/suspense/thrillers will be very disappointed in this novel, for it moves rather slowly and veers from the main "mystery" quite a bit. However, if you want a David Lynch-like peeling of the layers of modern-day small town America, you can't do much better than this.
review 2: When 17 year-old Linsey goes missing it affects all her neighbors. this interesting novel is crafted in a way that reveals glimpses into each one of her neighbors homes and lives. There's; an adultrous wife, a studly male barrista, misfit kids and a suspiciously odd old man. When the novel came to a close I realized I knew and cared much more about her neighbors, and family, than I did about Linsey. less

So boring, I only finished it to find out what happened to Linsey (no "D"). Not recommended.

This started out interesting and fizzled out 2/3 of the way through. Not worth the time.

Story is average at best, but the writing is well done.
