review 1: This was an entertaining book if you can get past some of its issues. One thing that consistently annoys me is the instant love for no rhyme or reason. They haven't even made any lengthy contact. For all Chloe knew, Julian had been whoring and debauching for a year. Then, all of a sudden, she is besotted with him, which quickly evolved into love. Also, I didn't really get why their family took it up as their mission to save Julian. I read the second book before this one and it is apparent that they are pretty neglectful. I didn't really get why they were so devoted to Julian's welfare. Those are the most glaring contrived elements. It served to detract from what would be an otherwise entertaining story. If you can get past it, it is a pretty enjoyable book. The story follo... morews Chloe and Julian. Julian had been devoted to his wife. Unfortunately for him, she had been scheming with his uncle to get him killed. It was only in the past year that he had seen her for what she truly is. After the last attempt on his life, Chloe and her family made contact and relayed the depth of their betrayal. It is then that he discovers he had a three year old son. He finally faces up to the reality and he plots, along with Chloe and Leo, how to deal with his murderous uncle and wife. Foiled numerous times, the uncle and the wife increasingly grow erratic. The wife grows reckless and commands assassination without much thought while the uncle devolves into madness. They grow into these one dimensional villains. They become onions of a sort as Julian and Chloe discover the depth of their evil deeds. We get it author, we know they are evil. No need to beat me on the head with it. The last ditch effort was the attack on the house, which was a nice one since there was actually action. The last confrontation ended with Arthur holding Chloe up as a shield and her cousin talking to her in Welsh so that they could coordinate the attack. She would duck to get out of the way while he shot the man.The story concluded with Chloe giving birth to twins. Overall, I think it is an entertaining story once you get past the absurd and contrived plots. There were many but I found this book more entertaining than cliched.
review 2: This is the first book in the Wherlocke Series. At this time, the series holds a total of five books. As a previous fan of both the Murrays and her vampire series, I look forward to reading this series. I’m still reeling at how I possibly missed a series that started in 2009.While a good start of an obviously well liked series, I have to admit it wasn’t my favorite by Hannah Howell. I had a lot of difficulty keeping with the story. It didn’t have the draw that I usually feel when reading a book by one of my favorite authors. The “I can’t/don’t want to put it down” feeling. It just wasn’t there for me this time, and I find I really can’t pinpoint what it was missing. The story has a mixture of romance, mystery and suspense. She even threw in a few murders and political machinations in the form of treason. The characters were likable. I found I liked Chloe’s innocence mixed in with a bit of spice. Her lack of stuffy, aristocratic behavior was refreshing as well. The heat between her and Julian was ice melting, but yet there remained a gentleness to their relationship. Both sweet and spicy, an intriguing mix.I found myself surprised by the evil portrayed in the antagonists. They were pure evil with nothing redeemable, which I found a bit unusual. Although, I think this change helped keep the story from being typical for me.I enjoyed the way the author took the same old historical style romance and added the paranormal twist to it. Like most of the Wherlocke family, Chloe has a gift. The heroine has the ability to see into the future. As the description says, this gift is the basis for saving the hero and his child.Favorite: I adored the interaction between Julian’s son and Chloe. Her natural instincts, when it comes to motherly affection, appealed to me.Disappointed: I wanted to hear more about the other family members and their gifts. More on the family history in general would’ve been a nice bonus. I felt like it was a missed opportunity.Overall, it was an enjoyable read. Despite the fact, it took longer for me to read than normal, I’m very interested in continuing the series. Right now, it’s only $4.30 on Amazon for 352 pages. less
