review 1: This was great. Of course, the little botheration are still there. The greatest one being the extended talk with Claudette's sister. If Hartley was being tortured, why were they taking their time with her. They could have gone and taken the information since Argus was there. I don't understand why they took the time to extract her secrets, which are ultimately irrelevant and serve no purpose outside of intimidation. To me, it was creating drama that backfired. Instead of being drawn in, I was taken out of the suspense by its needless dialogue. The other thing that I find annoying in this series is the instant love. As if being besotted early is bad enough, the heroines make the leap to love as soon as they see their heroes. With this book, it wasn't that bad only because s... morehe was acquainted with him through her visions since she was five. The high rating is because of its entertainment value. In spite of the little things that poke holes in the solidity of the story, there are also charming aspects due to the book's unique nature. My favourite scene in this book is Hartley touching his forehead to Alethea. It was during those moments that the story comes alive. Hartley had been away from Alethea due to the investigations and just reunited with her when they are interrupted. I think just that little gesture conveyed a particular touch of humanity to fictional characters and I found it refreshing. The story revolves around Alethea and Hartley. Alethea foresaw his death in the hands of Claudette. She travelled to London to warn him of the danger. He doesn't believe initially but does so when he witnesses it firsthand. She details the attack on his family, which leads to the discovery of his lost niece and nephew. They end up married but the danger still persists. Little by little, they corner Claudette, which only serve to make her more violent. She had ordered attacks first on Alethea, the niece (Alethea took by pushing her out of harm's way), and then to Hartley. They are joined by various Wherlocke clan who gather around each other when one is in trouble. I thought their appearances were pretty gratuitous and didn't really serve much purpose other than to show off their powers and that they are tight knit. Ultimately though, their cameos were less about the story than it was about them displaying their gifts. These are the little things that bother me but if you can get over it, this book is entertaining.
review 2: As you can tell from my rating above I really liked this book and it's a "keeper" for me. I took my time reading it because I did not want to miss a moment of it so I read it slow. The story is set around the Regency era in England and a family that paranoraml powers such as the ability to read minds, healing powers, ability to track someone, and many others. It is also a great romance with great hero and heroine, some suspense, and a Happily, Ever After tale. This is the 3rd book in the series and now I have to go find the rest of the books in the series to see if they live up to this one. less
