review 1: I seriously thought this book was going to be amazing when I first started it. I loved Rudy, I loved the mysterious island and the strange islanders and the magic fish. I even liked Teeth when I first met him... but then the book got weird and seemed to lose its purpose. The whole sodomizing fishermen and the raping magic fish... just whoa. I mean, I can handle some pretty weird shit in books, but this was just creepy and without explanation. The sad thing is Moskowitz is a really good writer. This book just went way off track.
review 2: I liked this book more for the general idea than the execution, which I found lacking. Also, personally, I prefer my mermaid tales not to include magical fish-on-human rape because WTF. Also, apparently fisherman like to moles
... moret adolescent mermaid boys because WHY? Gratuitous rapeyness just for rapeyness' sake it seemed like. The main boy sort of has romantic relationships with a girl and a fish boy, which wound have been great, but both were very underdeveloped. Likewise, the murky fish mythology was not fleshed out, so you really have no idea about anything. I'm not sure if that was just laziness on the author's part, or she wanted to leave critical answers for a sequel. less

Some elegant writing here but this surreal fable is not my sort of thing.
