review 1: I've never been disappointed by anything I have read by Harold Schechter and this book is no different. I was surprised that some readers felt the book was boring. It was a fascinating story. I enjoy the way Schechter gives you a thorough description of the era in which these events occurred. I did not know anything about Robert Irwin before I read this book. The story was intriguing especially considering that I am a psychotherapist and Irvine's possible diagnosis seems hard to pinpoint. Maybe it depends on your background but I find this book incredibly well-written and worth reading.
review 2: While I found the writing a little cut-and-dried, once you begin, you won't be able to put down this haunting true-crime thriller about Robert Irwin, or, 'The Mad Scul... moreptor'. It's got all the gory details of tabloid exaggerations of the day, crazy West-Coast religious cults, and East Coast decrepitude. An impressively well-researched work no doubt, you'll be thankful you killed some time with this one during the hot summer days... even though you may be a little on edge at night. less
