review 1: Urban fantasy with a strong touch of horror. #3 in a series, quite understandable without having read the first two. I like the worldbuilding aspects a lot- it's good background for a Cthullu in the 21st century type game, although it doesn't use the Cthullu mythos. Relationships between the characters are believable and have an impact on the story. Competently written although no particular wordplay. Read it through in one day, and it was good, but I don't have a burning desire to hunt down all the books in the series.
review 2: I've been reading up on urban fantasy as a way to become familiar with the genre, since I'm in the process of writing one myself. I read the first book of a number of series, and Connolly's first book in this series (Child of Fire) re... moremains my favorite first-in-a-series. I was mildly disappointed with the second, which seems to be a common reaction. It's unfortunate, because I fear that second disappointment led people not to read the third -- this book, Circle of Enemies. I like this one best (though, of course, this one wouldn't exist without the first...).The only weakness was the way-too-pat, one-paragraph explanations of things that came before; they felt way too crafted. But aside from those individual paragraphs, this book was a real page turner. So, while there are some close seconds (I really enjoyed Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher, for example, and if they get better with each book I expect they'll vie for the top spot), this book is my favorite urban fantasy novel.Sad that they publisher had to cancel the series... though it looks like he's self-publishing the prequel. I wasn't sure I would read it, but after reading this novel (which deals with some people who will appear in that prequel) I am pretty sure I will. less
