review 2:
... more At its base level, this is a pretty smart page-turner. At its best, it's a great take on strange isolations and the complicated problems of growing up and away from one's friends. But at it's worst, it can feel like "adolescent/existential angst for dummies." On this latter note, at certain points while reading, I was overwhelmed by how simplistic, cheesy, corny, or heavy-handed a given paragraph, sentence, or line of dialogue was. But, on the whole, these spotty sections (and I can't be sure to what extent they are the products of translation) did not overwhelm or commandeer what was, ultimately, a fun and rewarding read. Where he's at his best, in this book, is where he's giving me thick descriptions of stuff and places--layering the former on the latter, building a Japan I can sink my teeth into--even if it's highly Westernized (I get the standard critique...blah blah). End of the day: great book. Buy and read. less
