review 1: I liked it. I did not love it (which is a disappointment in the context of my general abiding love for Mr. Murakami). I haven't minded before when the author covers familiar territory - and I didn't mind here, for the first 150ish pages of the book, which I found elegantly compelling, but after that, I admit I grew a bit weary. The premise is interesting and melancholic and relatable; I just stopped caring a great deal at some point, which made me sad. It's by no means a dud - just not my favorite of Mr. M's.
