review 1: Up until about halfway through the book, I was set on giving it a 2-star rating, but then a couple of things happened that made me change my mind. Essentially, all the other reviewers who said there is nothing really special about this book are spot on. No real surprises. No real mystery. However, it is a YA book that is actually written for teens, as opposed to all the YA books that are really geared towards adults. I really appreciated the way Davis handled Shelby's boy-craziness. Shelby is boy-crazy, as teenagers her age are wont to be. But, being boy-crazy is not the same thing as being promiscuous and I thought the way Davis handled the relationships in this book were so appropriate. I also really liked the advice Shelby gave to Ariel about Price. That was sort of the... more turning point for me. And then I noticed some character development on the part of Shelby and could see how this book could be a really great story for young teens. There are going to be people who do not like this book; someone even noted that it came out at the height of the Twilight craze. If that is true, then I think it is actually the perfect complement. Where Bella is weak and insipid, Shelby is independent and sassy. Shelby's disregard for her own well-being in favor of others' well-being is constantly getting her in trouble, but in the end she owns it and realizes that, sometimes, the consequences are totally worth it.One last note. While I could not necessarily identify with it, I thought the tone and language of Davis' book captured the teenage mind really well. The narrator sounded like a teenager. Overall, I think Davis did a pretty good job of crafting a responsible, fun, and engaging story for teenagers, despite the lackluster plot.
review 2: So "Never Cry Werewolf" is a YA novella that follows a rich girl who goes to camp after ending up on the wrong side of her step-mother (if you've ever seen "The Parent Trap" and remember the father's fiancee and her shenanigans, you'll understand how the girl ended up at camp). The girl eventually falls for the werewolf son of a rock star. The story is good for tweens. It's a fast read. The characters' "bad behavior" is pretty mild. I would have no problem buying this book for my thirteen year old cousin or my friends' daughters. The counselor character was one of my favorites. For one, he's actually a complex person, not just a mindless adult who is an obstacle in the path of the main character. He genuinely cares for her and wants to help her deal with her baggage. He's a good example of why one should never judge a book by its cover. The story also presents a more sympathetic and thoughtful werewolf lore than what you find in a number of werewolf related stories. Werewolves are not evil, but instead suffer from a disease, the symptoms of which can be suppressed with medication. As for complaints - Um...why is this book only 150 pages long? (At least my eBook copy is). The thing that kept me from ranking this book higher is that I often felt that there wasn't enough time spent in developing things that could have (and should have) been developed more. I'm all for writing at a fast pace, but slowing down and developing the characters a bit more would have been nice. less

It was good book, one that stands out. I liked the story line, but it was slow at times.

I got to stop reading all the YA books I weed! There's a reason they were weeded :-)

Finished in one day... that does not happen often.
