review 1: I am not a Ripperologist, but I have somehow always been fascinated by Jack the Ripper stories. This one is better than others I have read. And true to form, Graham delays the identity of the killer until the very end allowing readers ample time to piece together the clues which are sprinkled throughout the story. The difficulty of having an ensemble cast of characters is giving them balanced time in the story. This does not occur. This book features Whitney as the main Krewe of Hunters member. Honestly, this is not much of a crew, as the other members are relegated to background and off-stage action. I am not sure how viable this method of storytelling will be (even though I know Graham has written quite a few more Krewe novels). In Book 2, readers got to know team ... moremember Jake, but here in book 3, he’s mentioned in only a few pages and has no character development at all. Not having read book 1 of the series, the other members of the team remain anonymous to me. I am not even convinced that Whitney is the protagonist in this book. I am tempted to see Jude as the main character because he is the one who grows and changes the most over the course of the novel, coming to reevaluate his belief in ghosts. Aside from having an intense love affair, Whitney does not change during the course of events. (On reflection, in book 2, I can also see Ashley as the protagonist rather than Jake; this is a dangerous precedent to set if your series is supposed to be about the Krewe.)I realize I am not the target audience for romantic suspense stories, so I find the love scenes quite amusing. Do men’s voices really get “husky” when they are in the mood, and do women’s voices really get “hoarse” when speaking to 6’3” men who are seducing them? On second thought, I do not want to know.
review 2: What a dumb book. The writing was riddled with inappropriate literary references and even a few misused words. The premise, an FBI special unit comprised of agents with the ability to see ghosts, is strange, but whatever. I thought it would be fun. It was just dumb. The female characters were all fluttery and dependent on the strong, decisive, intelligent (and hunky) male characters. The sex scenes were gratuitous, completely unnecessary to develop either the story or the characters. The police procedural aspects were poorly conceived and executed. The ending was predictable. Why did I listen to the end? Two reasons. The narrator, Luke Daniels was pretty good. He is the reason I gave this title an overall two stars instead of one. The other reason I didn't stop in the middle is that I'm a compulsive reader and a book has to be abysmal for me to stop before the end. This book was dumb, but not abysmally so.If you like ghost stories, you might like this. If you like police procedurals, save your money. less
