review 1: 4.5 stars. Favourite of the series. It didn't matter if the ending was predictable. It didn't atter if most of it was, actually. the characters were just so well drawn and everything was so well balanced and excellent.Penelope is my favourite of Snow's heroines, I think. Her or Lilliana. Pen just seemed so real. And Gabriel was excellent too. All of their decisions made sense, and why they conceded to the other's wishes made sense. Gabriel letting Pen treat him because he realized *her* guilt would haunt her if he didn't. Him realizing that she was suffering from trauma as well. Her intuition and general awareness of feelings. (Don't get me wrong, I love Snow's more traditionally scientifically-minded scientist heroines as well, but this was just a different kind... more of scientist.) Also, I loved how well Pen and Gabriel fit with Liliana and Geoffey. I really enjoyed seeing them again. This was just a well written romance novel. It's solid. Nothing bugged me at all.It almost felt like a modern romance that happened to be set as a historical. It's due to unique circumstances, obviously, but it's the truth.Basically, I liked this one. It's the first of the series that has completely worked for me. The first one almost did, but not as well as this one. The second I didn't like. This is definitely my favourite.Anyone know if more are planned? I do like the theory behind these books a lot, even I don't always uniformly love their execution.
review 2: Heather Snow has another solid book in Sweet Madness. I love an author who does her research, has it show in her writing but doesn't burden the story she is weaving with heavy facts. Again I found myself liking the heroine who is trying to help soldiers recover from war and finds herself falling in love with her late husband's brother whose family claims has gone mad. I won't give anything away about the antagonist, but I will say it was not who I thought it was going to be. More good stuff! This is another book that can stand alone, but I recommend all three. less
