review 1: Emma Wallingford, known as Pygmy to our hero, Lord Frederick Aveline (Derick), is the acting constable for Derbyshire. She has really started doing what is now forensic science but back in 1817 her skills are unusual. Emma has always loved Derick as they used to play together while growing up when he came in the summers to see his mother. Derick had been a spy during the war and as one last job he is looking for a traitor in Derbyshire. He tries to keep his past hidden but Emma has her ways of getting him to talk. Together, can they solve who is the traitor? Loved how Ms. Snow brings in rudimentary forensic science into the story. Met her at RT Convention and will definitely look for her other books. The story moves along and is quite intrig... moreuing.
review 2: I couldn’t get interested. The characters didn’t pull me in. They didn’t make me want to keep reading. There was too much pondering or thinking within the dialogue. For example she said something. Then two or three paragraphs of her or his thoughts before he said something. Several times I skimmed through these thoughts just to get to the dialogue (he said, she said, he said). The concept was good. Remember the math guy in the tv show Numb3rs? Emma is like the 1817 version of him - solving crimes using math. I think the author was careful to be historically accurate about mathematical ideas of the time, which I commend. There is a killer in the area. Emma came up with one thing about the killer using math. But that didn’t catch him. So not a lot happened with the math, but I liked the idea of it. Efforts by someone else eventually caught the killer The solving of that mystery was like a lot of other stories. I prefer something special or different.Derrick is an English Viscount but he doesn’t think he deserves to be. So learning why and changing his feelings is part of the story. He was a spy for England during the Napolean wars. He just now returned from France, looking for a traitor in the area where Emma lives. There was sex. It was ok. Derrick resists because he’s trying to be honorable. She’s the seducer. Sometimes that works. But for some reason it wasn’t exciting for me here. I usually I prefer the guy wanting, desiring, and going after the girl.DISCLOSURE:I received a complimentary copy from the author.DATA:Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 351 pages.
