review 1: There is absolutely nothing wrong with this HR - except it is so very typically HR. It ticks all the boxes but for me was not special and did not stand out. Le sign. Sometimes it feels like I have read all the great HRs - and am left wading in the mediocore; which is why I often find myself re-reading my favourites. Nevertheless - this is a sweet love story with an okay mystery. Geoffrey was actually a very nice hero - not a rake, not a jerk, haunted by bad experiences but not really tortured - and he is actually very commendable for what he wants to do. Liliana, likewise, is a very likable heroine; sometime she edges close to TSTL but looking back - I can understand why she acted the way she did. One thing I do want to note is that I agree with how the relationship fell a... morepart - trust is a foundation stone for any relationship and I think it is very realistic how both of them would have to work at it in the future. If I read this when I was just discovered HR I am pretty sure it would have been close to a 5 star - but having read some truly amazing stories since then - a 3 star would have to suffice.
review 2: So this was the 20th book I read in the first 2 weeks of January, and it was what prompted me to realize I was overdosing on historical romance a bit and needed to take a break. I really wanted to like this! I thought there was a good chance I would! But unfortunately there were just a lot of little things that I found irritating, and those little things were also things that had bugged me in other historical romances I had recently read that I didn't care for, so those little details ended up bugging me even more than normal here. It's definitely not an awful book, and I can see why other people enjoyed it, and I wouldn't warn anyone away from it, but it wasn't for me. I really didn't like Geoffrey at all, and so I couldn't get invested in the romance, which... is obviously a major hindrance in enjoying a historical romance. It also didn't help that this was another romance that featured the hero and heroine kissing the very first time they meet each other, which I'm just not a fan of 99% of the time when it comes to historical romances, and that's totally my own issue, but it made it hard for me to care about the romance when I was starting things off already annoyed. I remember feeling really frustrated when Aveline first showed up because I found myself enjoying his dynamic with Liliana so much more, but I knew that nothing was going to happen between them. Basically, this book wasn't bad, but it just really wasn't for me. I might still read the other books in this series just because I did like Aveline so I'm interested in reading his book, and I'm also intrigued by Penelope's book, and hopefully one of those will be more to my liking. less
