review 1: Ten year old Pia Kolvenbach is shunned by her friends when her grandmother dies in a horrific accident. She is devastated when she finds out that her parents are divorcing and she will have to leave the German town she has lived in most of her life. The only friend she has is a boy known as "StinkStefan". Soon the two begin hanging out together and regularly visiting a local elderly man, Herr Schiller, who tells them stories. During the St. Michael's Festival a young girl disappears during the ceremonies. The town is in a panic but then other girls begin to disappear. The town rumor mongers blame Herr Düster, the local eccentric. Pia and Stefan find out that this happened before in the town decide they must find out what has happened to the girls before Pia has to mov... moree to England. This was a good book. The characters were well written and the story was very well done.
review 2: This story has a fairy-tale like quality about it from the very beginning. The main character, Pia, lives in Germany in a small town called Bad Munstereifel (that ought to be your first clue) and from the day her grandmother accidentally goes up in flames, things start going down hill for her. Next girls start disappearing from the town and it's up to Pia and her only remaining friend Stefan to discover who is behind the missing girls. With delightfully creepy stories thrown in by Herr Schiller, an elderly neighbor and friend, this makes for a sinister, dark story just right for a cold Winter's night. less

Urm quite a boring book. I figured out who had taken Katharina in the first couple of chapters.
