review 1: Many readers know of Mankell through this Wallendar series. His standalone novels are similarly provocative and crisply written. This story, set in 1904, follows the experiences of a young Swedish woman and her unexpected landing in Mozambique. Told from her point of view, the novel plunges the reader into a world of confusion brought about by colonialism and its destructive effects upon the native people. Circumstances send Hanna to live in a brothel, though she is not a prostitute. She finds the behavior of the African women puzzling, particularly their lack of response to her attempted kindnesses. The plot takes repeated unexpected twists as Hanna deals with her loneliness (few white women in the city) and the corrupt environment. Mankell does not oversimplify nor ... morestereotype any of the characters. He lives in Mozambique half of each year, and knows its history and troubles well.Highly recommended for readers of historical fiction, women's issues, and Africa.
review 2: Although Kurt Wallender is not present in this novel, the author does as great a job developing the main character, Hannah, a Swedish woman in Portuguese East Africa over a hundred years ago, as he does in his famous novels about the aging Swedish homicide detective. This novel starts a little slower than the Wallender novels, but becomes just as suspenseful and captivating. If you like Henning Mankell, you will like this. less
