review 1: i personally did not fall over this book but it is better than the usual book that i read i don tcall this book spectacular because the first half of this book is practically going no where with the occasional interesting point so you are really reading nothing for a while but eventually it gets interesting and is pretty good if the author were to put more interesting stuff into the first part of each book it would definitely be a best-seller book, but then again this is my personal review.
review 2: Ahh, like watching author H. Neff playing chess with himself. This is a writer to watch, his red herrings and foreshadowing are delightful traps to fall into as a reader. Either that, or my memory's failing me, since I didn't see the ending coming despite all the c
... morelues littered along the way. Faster paced than the previous two books, with higher stakes, and a good sense of character growth that I enjoyed very much. Max, the protagonist, has grown wiser and more patient, yet still keeps his passion and bloodlust. The story also gets a hundred times more brutal, with higher death tolls of friends and foes alike. One of the best things I liked about the series is its focus on the after-war - of what happens after the losing. I've read a number of books with the winning or losing as the climax (and most times there's a short, almost half-hearted epilogue about what happens after if the author's generous), but I don't think I've read a book that follows through that far after the point.Off to read the next one! less

3/7/13 ** Well, I'm not done reading this yet, but I'm thoroughly intrigued with the world. I appreciate the way that Neff shows Max's growth, both in a physical sense (he's shaving now) and emotionally. He's realizing that having people under one's care and for whom one is responsible might change how one approaches a problem. It seems that he's showing some empathy for the decisions of the Rowan leaders that he once criticized.A note about my own reading...I was so "into" the world, that I didn't want to wait 2-3 days over the weekend for my local library to deliver books 3 & 4 to my branch (after I finished book 2). Because I now have an iPad with a functional Kindle ap, I succumbed and bought book 3 in the e format. I've not done much reading on the iPad but am finding unexpected benefits. I enjoyed reading the author's blog in the middle of reading the book and from the comfort of my bed/pillow. The hot links in the ebook format worked perfectly.

This book is stunning the way that he portrays the way magic is affecting our outside world and that we have no way of knowing the way he makes it look as though its acutely possible is amazing. hes character work is my favorite though how he makes max this fierce savage warrior but at the same time you still see how hes a teenager. and how his choices affect him. but david the mighty sorcerer is still so powerful and not because of his magic alone at the same time you see how smart and clever he is and that's where the true power comes from. the way that he makes both max and david so powerful but at the same time they have that soft side too them that allows us as readers connect too them in a way that we feel as though we know them personally. iv read this book many times but every time i read it i still find my self loving every page there its any portions of the book that feel like just filler int ll the next part. all the book feels important.

This was great but now I have to wait until 2012 for the next one, sigh. That's too long.
