Amelia Bedelia Chapter Books
review 1: This chapter book version of a classic series follows a young Amelia Bedelia and her family as they embark on a summer road trip. Lots of puns and double meanings involving fishing and summer fun abound in this fun title.Black-and-white line drawings accompany each chapter. A sneak peek of Amelia Bedelia Goes Wild is included at the end of the book. This book (and any Amelia Bedelia title) is great for teaching homonyms. Lots of fun with language abounds in these books, and the chapter book format will introduce this beloved character to a wider age group. This book would also appeal to kids looking for a funny and engaging early chapter book, and may also appeal to students who are anticipating some vacation travel. Although I applaud the attempt to broaden the age range f... moreor this heroine, I don’t think the particular brand of literary humor that has always been the hallmark of Amelia Bedelia books translates as well to the longer format. The book does better explain all Amelia Bedelia’s misnomers, but I miss the crazy hijinks, bizarre mistakes, and exasperated characters that typically accompany Amelia Bedelia books. But this may be nostalgia talking!
review 2: Amelia Bedelia is as charming as in the previous books. This time it's off on a family vacation and adventure awaits on the open road. These are such fun to read. The love and care that Herman Parish has given Amelia Bedelia is easily felt by the reader. I love that we are reading about her life as a contemporary young girl. There's a sense of wide-eyed wonder coupled with her literal-mindedness, and it works so well for her at this age. For this entry in the series, we get a much greater sense of the loving family they are than in the others, as it's all about the three of them on vacation. Adventures abound but they are more like finding the adventures of the everyday. Boiled down, it's "A family goes on a car trip and has a good time." But within that is a good family story from a new take on a familiar and welcome character.Keep 'em coming, please! less
