review 1: Amelia Bedelia trots off to her first day of school. She experiences many misadventures as she takes everything her teacher says literally. By the end of the book, Amelia has glued herself to her chair and requires Miss Edward's help to unstick her bottom from the chair. Very young children may not understand all of the humor and word play in the book, but they will understand Amelia's silly antics as she glues herself to a chair and bounces into a grown up. The book could provide an opportunity to work with children on vocabulary development.
review 2: Herman Parish has reimagined his Aunt Peggy Parish’s beloved character as a young girl in this new series of picture books. In this particular book, young Amelia Bedelia embarks on an adventurous first day of
... moreschool. All of the trademark Amelia Bedelia moments are present here as young Amelia predictably misinterprets various homophones, and takes common idioms literally. Kindergartners will relate to this book because they will understand what it is like to go to school and meet a new teacher and play with new friends. Kindergartners are also sophisticated enough to understand the humor when Amelia Bedelia’s mother tells her to hop on the bus and she actually hops like a bunny, or when Amelia and her friends literally “jump rope” by jumping over the rope at recess. Kids will appreciate the clever plays on words, like when the teacher says to “wiggle your fingers on that clay” and Amelia begins tickling her friend Clay. They will feel proud that they know and understand that when the teacher says “to glue yourself to your chair” that you don’t actually do it! Avril’s bright, cartoon-like watercolor illustrations offer the perfect complement to Amelia’s bright and sunny disposition. Amelia is always on the move and Avril’s illustrations reflect that as well. The picture clues that Amelia imagines as she hears each classmate’s name during roll call will also serve as picture clues to help the kindergartners read along with you. Adults will appreciate the nod to the original Amelia Bedelia, when young Amelia glues daisies to her headband and insists that everyone use her full name. This would be a fun book to share in a back-to-school-themed or first-day-of school-themed storytime, to help the children prepare and look forward to the fun of the first day—it gives them a glimpse of what’s to come and Amelia’s humor may make something that seems like it could be scary, seem less so. One might also use this book to introduce the idea of homophones or common idioms, as they frequently appear in the text. less
