review 1: Not my kind of book. We read it for book club and for me, it was a chore, a long chore. There were a lot of beautiful passages, but that wasn't enough to engage me. I didn't care much for Cromwell or anyone else for that matter. I'm not much one for royalty or their hangers-on. I agree with many of the comments here, especially about often having no idea who was speaking or who they were talking about. I referred frequently to Wikipedia to figure out what was going on. I feel like this book assumed that I already knew everything about this story and Ms. Mantel was giving me an alternative perspective on these well-known characters and events. This approach was lost on me, a person who remembers little of this drama from my high-school history classes and doesn't really car... moree to know more.
review 2: This is an amazing book. The writing is so original for a historical novel. She puts you right in the action, right in the 16th century, but it is still comfortable to a contemporary reader. The character of Cromwell is well drawn, and the reader feels real emotion for his successes and failures. I am looking forward to the next book, but I will probably not read it just yet. Too much of a good thing, maybe? less
