review 1: The historical plausibility is astonishing, you start to feel you inhabit this world and start to adopt its norms, it's fear of disease, the constant references to authority (of God or king), the jockeying for position and how the common man is almost unseen. It struck me how erudite the top class were, their world is Plato and gospels and they refer directly to those in a way we could not conceive now. I do believe I will read another.
review 2: The brilliant Hilary Mantel has done it again with a layered, nuanced, and completely convincing view into the intrigues of the court of Henry VIII through the eyes of the sometimes ruthless (but always fascinating) Thomas Cromwell. In this one, the Seymours begin their rise as the Boleyns fall with with nearly breatht... moreaking speed. And while I can't wait to read the third work in this proposed trilogy, my heart breaks a bit because I know all about its bitter end. less
