review 1: This book is set in Paris in 1989 during the time the Berlin Wall is coming down in Germany and Rushdie is facing opposition for The Satanic Verses. Kate is an assistant to a prominent photojournalist and trying to figure out her place in the world as a new adult. I really liked the book, except that the main character spent the entire time in moral denial, not being able to decide whether she thought a certain situation was right or wrong simply because she wanted to do things her way. Despite that half of the book (which wasn't that irritating, just disappointing) it drew the reader in and the subject material and plot were all good. It also will have you craving croissants and champagne.
review 2: This is an appealing novel with strong, memorable charact
... moreers, sort of a "Devil Wears Prada" set in Paris. There is much that it captures adeptly about the French without falling into the usual pitfalls of stereotypes and cliches. It's clear that the author genuinely knows not just about France but about the complicated experience of being an ex-pat. My only complaint is that the language often felt flat, and while tensions were strong between characters, the prose was sometimes lacking. less
