review 1: I love Paris and was looking forward to reading a book about Paris. I was disappointed to find out that this was a book about a naive young girl who went to Paris to work for a very strange family and was faced with all kinds of obstacles that she didn't know how to handle. There was very little about Paris and way too much about the family. I didn't really like any of the characters in the book and had to force myself to finish it. Very disappointing.
review 2: ‘Lessons in French’ is a coming of age story of a young, aspirational American woman in Paris. A tale of longing and self-discovery against the back drop of the socio-political changes of 1990’s Europe. I much enjoyed being transported to Kate’s head and becoming part of her exhilarating jou
... morerney. For anyone with a passion for all things French this novel is a real treat. Reyl soulfully depicts how young awakenings undoubtedly provide an emotional blueprint for one’s future life. I have read the book in Dutch and parts of it in English and felt that the prose in the latter -the writer’s original voice- was more efficient and engaging. Even though I enjoyed both and would definitely recommend ‘Lessons ins French’ in any language, I feel nonetheless that Kate and her surroundings came to life with more passion and verve in the English version. A must read debut, for sure! less
