review 1: Ah hmmmmm gosh. My colleague would and will love the descriptions of Japanese food, and the heroine is indeed uniquely quirky. I kind of liked the slow unfolding but hmmmmm honestly I got sick of the food descriptions and the endless drinking.Someone with an ear, eye and heart more sensitive to Japanese culture would enjoy this book.I seem to be better at wallowing in horror at the lives of the Irish during the early 20th century along with Sebastian Barry, or the variety of lives presented by T. C. Boyle.
review 2: Not quite sure if I really want to review this incredibly mediocre book. It is very Japanese, but not in a good way. Lead character Tsukiko and her love interest Sensei, an older man who used to be her teacher in high school, spend quite a bit of ti... moreme together talking about mushrooms, drinking saké by the bottle and dancing around the obvious fact that they are both interested in a romantic relationship. This is just about all that happens in the entire book.Then again, there wouldn't even be a book if it weren't for Sensei's somewhat autistic schoolmaster approach of other people, which never really struck me as credible or remotely interesting. I've read books like this before, and if you are interested in the whole Japanese aesthetic, I'd just recommend reading Murakami (Haruki or Ryu, for that matter) and Kawabata. But hey, if Japanese people eating mushrooms and drinking saké is your jam, then go ahead. You will adore this book, since it features lots of different mushrooms. And types of saké. For those who actually dig a good story line and fine pensmanship, I'd just say - 'eh'. less
