review 1: This was a lovely little story of first love. Very sweet, low angst. At first it seemed like insta-love (and I am not really a fan of that), but then the pace of the physical attraction slowed down and the relationship between Luke and Ran built in the way that made their long term success seem possible. The reaction of Luke's parents to them as a couple was also very believable. I especially loved how the issue of racism was raised as a problem as big as homophobia. Definitely a recommended read, especially as a comfort read.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed "The One for Me." It's a short story about two teens who are introduced when Ran is placed in Luke's home by the foster care system. Their initial friendship is built on shared interests. Ran has experience
... mored abuse and rejection in the past for being gay, so he decides not to disclose his sexual orientation to the Turner family, in hopes of finding a new start. Luke has never given much thought to his own sexual desires and is surprised and confused by his building attraction to Ran. As their friendship deepens it begins to open Luke's eyes to the possibilities of being gay, but the unexpected revelation of Ran's orientation put a strain on his relationship with the rest of the Turner family. Although this book does an excellent job addressing the racial stereotypes and misconceptions the two face, it isn't a book about race. Rather, it's a story about coming of age, sexual discovery, the challenges of love, and finding a way to build new love into a lasting relationship. Sexy without being graphic, the intimate relationship that develops between these two young men as they graduate high-school, enter college, find employment and grow into adulthood is perfectly woven into this heartfelt story. less
