review 1: Date: November 25th, 2014Author: Holly Robinson Peete and Ryan Elizabeth Peete with Denene Millner; Pictures by Shane W. EvansTitle: My Brother CharliePlot: Holly Robinson Peete's picture-book that she has co-written with her daughter focuses on the life of twins Callie and Charlie, siblings that have been inseparable since birth, yet they are extremely different. Setting: Callie and Charlie's home; Various settingsCharacters: Callie and CharliePoint-of-View: First-Person Theme: Family; Differences; LoveStyle: Children's Picture-Book with African-American charactersCopyright: 2010Notes: This book was actually surprisingly good. This would be a great book to have in any students personal library or any teacher or librarians book collection because the book did a great job d... moreiscussing autism in the book. Must read!
review 2: What?: A sibling’s perspective on having a brother with autism. Callie recounts the events in their lives and her brother Charlie’s way of seeing things. Callie reflects on what they share in common—like being twins—and the ways in which they are different, yet love each other the same.So What?: Students will learn unconditional love and acceptance. They will also learn that people express themselves in different ways: some with words and others more so with actions. Now What?: This book provides a springboard to discuss how all of us learn and communicate. I would use this book to demonstrate how some people interpret the world around them differently than you might, but each of us has our own unique way of expressing ourselves. I would conclude by having students write one example of how they communicate to a sibling, friend, or parent/grandparent. less
