review 1: So far I’ve read all the retellings of classic Count of Monte Cristo stories by The Holy Ghost Writer and “That Girl Started Her Own Country” is one of my favorites. I really liked the fact that it’s set in modern times, and that it was inspired by Steig Larsson’s books. This book is a fast-paced thriller that features an engaging and edgy main heroine, Zaydee, who really came alive on the page. In the course of the story, Zaydee becomes a sort of modern day Count of Monte Cristo. She comes from modest means and beginnings, just like Edmond Dantes, lands herself spectacularly in jail, and by the end of the story ends up founding her own country, where she may live out her life in peace and according to her own terms. Her troubled and complicated love affair wi... moreth Steven Larson was also very well-written and developed, and I found myself reading faster to find out their ultimate fate. You do not have to read the rest of the books in the series for this one to make sense, as it features all new characters and is set far in the future compared to the other books. I highly recommend the whole series though!
review 2: That Girl Started Her Own Country is a book I bought because the title hooked me and I read in the reviews that fans of Stieg Larsson would enjoy this. The reviews were right, not only did I enjoy it, I loved it and have found a new favorite author to add to my list! The writing is terrific, the story fast-paced and I loved the character of international playgirl Zaydee, she's strong and beautiful and brilliant. Definitely one of the best thrillers I've read in a while, I highly recommend it! less
