review 1: Warning: contains spoilersI don't remember reading The Count of Monte Cristo, however I do remember us having an in-depth discussion about it in our English class in High School. But that was, years ago and I kind of don't remember it that well anymore but I still am familiar with the story. At first, I was really confused with the book. I didn't know if it was serious or not. Until now, I still haven't decided whether the name Medusalock is cheesy or clever. There are times when I had to pause and decide if it has fantasy elements or if some words were just too lyrical. Don't get me wrong, lyrical is good. Here's a sample of some poetic lines "Her waters turn magically from amethyst to hot azure to hazy purple..." The words were beautifully written, you almost want to see ... morethe waters for yourself. My issue is that the story moved too fast sometimes and some "scenes" were too "spoon-feedingy". I also felt that Dantes was too perfect, even with his faults.I loved that it was culturally rich, though. There were mentions of traditions, food and languages that I believe weren't on the original book. I also loved that the female characters were very strong women even though they were all eventually part of a harem. Also, the references from other stories were really nice.By the end of the book, I already grew attached to some of the characters. I especially loved Raymee and I wanted to know what happened next. In its entirety though, I didn't think the book was gripping but its length at least makes it okay to read.
review 2: First of all, French is my first language and as I am fluent in both French and English, I decided to compare the English version of this book to the French one, and something very interesting that I noticed is that I can hardly say if the author is French or English! It seems that Holy Ghost Writer is fluent in both languages, as I do, and it make me think that he have French origins!I'm a big fan of French literature. And it is a little by chance that I discovered this book. I must say that I was a bit skeptical at the beginning. Indeed, it is not easy to continue a classic and a reference such as The Count of Monte Cristo. But I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Indeed, I found through this mysterious author, the style of Alexandre Dumas, with a fluid and descriptive writing that takes us into the world of Edmond Dantes.I always wondered what happened to Edmond, Mercedes and other characters, from the world of Dumas. It is therefore with great interest that I read this story. The passion of Haydée and of Mercedes for Dantes is still appealing. It highlights the courage, the intelligence and craftiness of Dantes in every situations. The main character is wiser and regret the vengeance of his past, he learn the forgiveness. Human relations and religion have a prominent place. The author leads the reader into the story as a friend you would do in his adventure. This adventure story is very similar to the stories of The Arabian Nights. This is really a book that I recommend to everyone, fans of classic literature or in general. It leads us to the heart of the period and the descriptive narrative takes us through the paths of Dantes.I look forward to read more! less

Great continuation of Dumas' writing, but very unfulfilling. Where is the rest of it?
