The Betrayal Knows My Name
review 1: Going with three stars for this one, though it's a bit more like two and a half. I decided to go with the higher end because I simply *can't* rate this as low as the trainwreck that Vampire Knight has become...this volume wasn't up to Odagiri-san's usual standard, but the story still makes sense! I knew this volume wouldn't be as satisfying as the others simply because it's so much shorter. I got rather spoiled with all of those double editions, but I was still excited to see the next chapters and find out what happened to Shuusei and Tooko. Takashiro and company also had that interesting murder investigation going on back in Tokyo, and I was curious to see where that storyline would go as well. So, imagine my surprise when all of that is dealt with in a rather quick, offha... morend manner so that we can focus on.....Yuki Angst. Again. Ugh. -_- Now, I realize that this series has more angst than your teenage livejournal. It's an important component of most shoujo manga and the other characters in this series have it oozing out their ears as well...but there is just something so obnoxious about Yuki Angst. He has annoyed me since the beginning, generally due to the usual Mary Sue nonsense of being a special snowflake that is loved by all, but it was particularly irritating in this volume. Apparently, he has some sort of super secret tragic history with Sairi...shock. And trying to regain his memories gives him a headache. And he just doesn't understand why Sairi "hates" him. And this somehow warrants more page time than Shuusei possibly being dead or the murder investigation in Tokyo. The bottom line, at least for me, is that I don't really *care* about Yuki. He is too perfect to feel like a real character. Sairi and Lia both feel a bit unnecessary and flat to me as well, they just are not as developed or interesting as the rest of the cast. So, with this volume focusing more on those three, it's no surprise that it fell a little short. On a positive note, the art continues to be gorgeous and some interesting possibilities are raised about the Giou branch in Kyoto. I hope that the next volume deals more with the older, better developed characters and less with Yuki's ridiculous need for everyone to adore him.
review 2: I really like this series. The artwork is pretty and the character's relationships are suggestive in a fun way. Character growth happens and a mystery is slowly being solved. In fact this series feels like it could go on for a really long time, which may not be a good thing. Odagiri has a tendency to throw in fillers or maybe I should say focus so much on the characters and their relationships/feelings that the plot suffers. But despite that this is a fun read. Some positives: - Find out who's the killer (sort of)- Find out what happened to Shuusei and Tooko (mostly)- Find out the truth about Yuki's mother- Yuki matures - A new pretty boy is shown (maybe he's important, maybe he isn't) less
