review 1: This is one of those (often SF) books in which the premise is so much better than the execution that it makes my soul hurt. The world that Howey has created is fascinating (enough so that I would have loved more hard details about it). My issue is that once the story got spinning (which took awhile), it didn't seem to know where it wanted to go. And then when it got there, it felt a little derivative.I don't mean to give the impression that I didn't enjoy the book. I did. I just think that there were bigger, better places for it to go that it never quite reached. still well worth a read, if only for the creativity of the premise.

... moreing. I think that perhaps the characterisation wasn't great and made me feel as though it was lacking? The world building wasn't amazing either, I kept noticing stuff that wasn't fully fleshed out and the fact that there seems to be no queer people really bugged me. I'll admit that I'm a pedant and I like to figure out the logistics of unusual worlds in my head. It's one of the things I like about most sci-fi!Saying all that, I will be reading the other two... less
