review 1: Hugh Howey continues to delight me! His character development is very good -- I already miss the ones from this story. And his ability to weave a plot with enough twists and turns to provide suspense, delight, and satisfaction is unparalleled in ALL the vast amount of science fiction I've read.Probably one of the most important components of his writing that brings me back (in addition to his command of the craft), is his ability to recast important issues of our day into a story that doesn't come across as a retread of our cultural conversation about it. He may have an agenda, but he leaves open to the reader any possibility you may prefer.I'm already looking forward to whatever he comes up with next.
review 2: Hugh Howey delivers in this new book. While I
... morewas disappointed it was more modern day/less dystopian than his usual stories, I still found myself reading into the wee hours of the night as his characters pulled me from page to page. This is a romance and a parable. It is a reminder of how many beautiful things we take for granted and how quickly we are heading towards the worlds of Sand and of Wool. Well written, Hugh. Next one soon, please. less

I liked that it was different from what I've read lately. Makes me want to go shelling.

Not typical Hugh Howey fare...too much like a romance novel which is just not my thing.

Good story turned blah, blah love story. Bummer.
