review 1: Horrible girlie book, slow movinmg story of nasty, mean spirited people who behave so unkindly toward each other that one wonders if this is really normalicy and the rest of us are crazy. I sympathized with the long suffering father who is blamed for everything by his rich, blockheaded wife and vicious daughter, but he was so willing to be victimized that one ended up hating him too. The other male characters were barely two dimensional. There was a phony mystery about the fate of the son, only because it was not revealed to the reader, and it turned out to be of no interest anyway.....I can't say enough bad things about this stupid book.
review 2: Bass's first novel begins as the Ascher family are planning a wedding where Emily Ascher daughter of popular ac
... moretor turned playwright Joe Ascher is planning to marry Clay. The site of the wedding is where the old family home used to stand, and Emily's insistence on having the ceremony here jumpstarts a mixed bag of pent-up memories and silent animosities. Over the past decade or so the Ascher's have stumbled through one crisis after another-divorce, death, affairs..... parts were very frustrating as it takes forever until the author ties up all of the hanging (burning questins). i am not a fan of unnecessary suspense. What actually happened to the house, How did thomas really die, What type of cancer did he have, Why all the anger.... get the picture. yes we finally get the answers but i am not sure i cared at that point. less
