review 1: I had to stop at 25% otherwise, I'd be more likely to spend the day sleeping. I wonder if this book secretes melatonin? Anyhow, I think where this book suffers is the repetitively elaborate descriptions of the settings that oftentimes become so useless and unnecessary. I can appreciate novels that start slow, but this is just a boring kind of slow especially when I don't find anything special with Sylas's core character. However, I'll probably read this book again in the future just to see how the whole soulmate concept works. P.S. The soul counterpart and the son in search of his mother plotlines remind me so much of Ni No Kuni. And compared to The Bell Between Worlds, Ni No Kuni is far superior.
review 2: Perhaps it was the rush to finish my reading goal quic
... morekly, but I never fully got immersed in this novel.Regardless I have to say I enjoyed the writing, and the world building was solid. I fear that Johnstone just introduced too many characters too quickly, and only developed a few of them. I also didn't like the way that things progressed for Sylas so quickly and easily. It felt a bit rushed.Still, I enjoyed the fantasy worlds and the different 'Ways' intrigue me. Three and a half stars less
